A briefly capital fortress climbed by almost no one else that morning.

A visit to Yapahuwa Rock Fortress, a little visited 13th century capital built around a granite outcrop, with an ornately carved stone stairway flanked by Sri Lanka’s only Chinese-style stone lions, the same lion once depicted on the ten rupee note. Considerably quieter than the more famous Cultural Triangle sites.
